M458: Defines a Slavic subgroup within the more general M17+ R1a group. The M458+ group accounts for ~70% of R1a chromosomes in parts of Poland and the Ukraine, but is found from Sweden in the north to Russia in the east and Croatia and Greece in the south. It is also found in Germany and Denmark, which are important source populations for England. Although M458 has not yet been observed in the British Isles, it is likely to be present at low frequencies and would likely indicate Germanic, rather than Norse ancestry, given that 0/17 tested Norwegian R1a chromosomes were M458+ while about one third of German M17 chromosomes are M458+. Please go to our custom SNP menu to order this marker and enter 'M458' in the appropriate field when prompted.
